Keeping the Expo Enjoyable — One Trap at a Time

Our team has been working hard around the Jackson County Expo this season, and we wanted to give you a behind‑the‑scenes look at what mosquito surveillance really looks like. Every week, our technicians set and check traps throughout the county to monitor mosquito activity, identify species, and track any potential carriers of West Nile virus.

This photo shows the results from just one trap in the Expo area — a total of 2,139  mosquitoes collected in a single night. It’s a powerful reminder of how quickly mosquito populations can grow and why consistent monitoring and treatment are so important.

Before mosquitoes ever reach this stage, our crews are out treating standing water, storm drains, irrigation ditches, and other breeding sites to stop larvae from developing into biting adults. This larval control work is one of the most effective tools we have for reducing mosquito numbers and protecting public health.

When adult mosquitoes are active, our traps help us pinpoint hotspots, understand species trends, and respond quickly when numbers spike. Everything we collect gets counted, identified, and recorded — giving us the data we need to stay ahead of the season.

Our goal is simple: To help Jackson County enjoy outdoor events, concerts, fairs, and summer evenings with fewer mosquito nuisances and a lower risk of mosquito‑borne disease.

We’re proud to serve this community, and we’re out here every day working to keep you safe, healthy, and able to enjoy the outdoors all summer long.

Board of Trustees Places Local Option Levy on the November 2026 Ballot

The Jackson County Vector Control District Board of Trustees — Craig Hility, Mike Taylor, Bruce Jackson, Cal Lanfear, and Robin Norris — has voted to place a local option levy on the November 2026 ballot.

The District requires additional funding to respond to increased demands for service and the rising costs to provide them. The proposed levy is $0.05 per $1,000 of assessed property value (about $1.25 per month / $15 per year for the average property owner).
