Public Meeting Notice:

What To Know About Avian Influenza

March 7, 2023 by Andrew Partin

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been detected in most Oregon counties.  The virus typically affects wild waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and scavengers like vultures.  However, it can spread to domestic poultry and cause serious disease outbreaks.  It does not usually impact songbirds but it is still a good idea to keep birdfeeders clean and take them down if you notice dead birds in the area.  Human infections are rare but have been reported.

For more information on this disease, reporting dead birds and precautions to take, visit ODFW or ODA’s avian influenza pages.
