Mosquitofish Season Begins May 4th

May 4, 2026 by JCVCD

May 4th marks the start of mosquitofish distribution for Jackson County residents, and Jackson County Vector Control District is ready to help you prepare for mosquito season.

Mosquitofish are an effective, environmentally friendly option for controlling mosquito larvae in ponds, water features, livestock troughs, and other permanent standing‑water sources.

How Mosquitofish Help

  • They feed on mosquito larvae before they can develop into biting adults.
  • They provide continuous control throughout the warm season.

Who Can Receive Mosquitofish

Jackson County residents can receive mosquitofish at no cost for qualifying water sources on their property. Our staff will help determine whether mosquitofish are the right fit for your situation.

How to Request Mosquitofish

Residents can stop by during business hours.

JCVCD remains open during normal office hours — Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Restrictions on Placement

Mosquitofish are a non-native species. Oregon law (ORS 498.222) and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) stipulates where certain non-native fish, including mosquitofish, can be placed.  This is intended to mitigate negative impacts to native species.  ODFW restricts the stocking of mosquitofish to “aquaria”, which is defined as self-contained waterbodies and tanks not fed or drained by natural waterways.  Natural waterways include creeks, streams, sloughs, ponds, lakes and any ditches connected to them.  Permanent ponds located in floodplains should also not be stocked since floodwater could allow mosquitofish to enter natural waterways.
