At Jackson County Vector Control District, we use Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM). IMM focuses on using multiple methods to control nuisance mosquitoes and mosquitos that can spread viruses like West Nile and Zika.
One component of IMM is surveillance. Technicians maintain dozens of pesticide-free traps throughout the county that use either dry ice, bottled CO2, or water as an attractant. In addition to providing samples for disease testing, traps show us what species we have and give us an idea of how many there are which is important information when planning control operations.
