Flies are a nuisance but they can also spread disease.  As spring approaches, here are a few practical tips for controlling flies in and around your home:

  • Keep things tidy.  Clean up promptly after you eat and wipe down tables and counter surfaces after eating or preparing food.  Pick up after your pet indoors and outdoors!
  • Use fly-proof containers.  This is especially important when eating outdoors to prevent flies from landing in your food and spreading potentially harmful bacteria.
  • Keep them out.  Seal cracks, repair or replace broken screens and doors, and keep doors and windows closed.
  • Keep your trash clean.  Ensure garbage bags are tied securely and that lids fit properly on garbage cans.  Keep garbage cans as clean, paying particular attention to the bottom where debris and liquids collect.
