Fall Brings out Mosquito Look-Alikes
Several insects such as the wood gnat (Anisopodidae sp.) and winter cranefly (Trichoceridae sp.) can be abundant in our area during fall and early winter. They resemble mosquitoes, but don’t bite people or carry diseases. They lay eggs in moist soil and the larvae feed on decaying organic material. Adults often seek shelter in and around people’s homes, particularly on porches, under eaves, and in dense vegetation. They sometimes cover vehicles, attracted by the color and warmth.
If the weather seems too cold for mosquitoes but you’re noticing lots of bugs flying around, you’re likely seeing one of these harmless species. However, give us a call anytime you’re concerned about insects you’re seeing around your home or property!
