Hot tubs and swim spas can be excellent additions to a backyard, providing relaxation, exercise, and family enjoyment. When properly maintained, they are typically not suitable environments for mosquito breeding because the water is filtered, circulated, and treated.
However, mosquitoes can still become a problem when standing water collects around spa equipment. Water trapped on spa covers, in cover folds, around drainage areas, or in nearby containers can provide ideal breeding habitat. Mosquitoes can complete their life cycle in as little as a week during warm weather.
To reduce mosquito activity around your hot tub or swim spa:
- Remove standing water from covers and surrounding areas.
- Keep filters and circulation systems operating properly.
- Store equipment and toys where rainwater cannot collect.
- Empty containers weekly.
- Inspect your yard after rainstorms for hidden water sources.

Remember, mosquitoes don’t need a pond to breed. Even small amounts of standing water can produce hundreds of mosquitoes.
By combining regular spa maintenance with simple mosquito prevention practices, you can enjoy your backyard while helping reduce mosquito populations throughout the community.
Jackson County Vector Control District encourages residents to practice the “Tip and Toss” method: regularly inspect your property, tip out standing water, and toss unused containers that collect rainwater.
