Rats in August: What Jackson County Residents Should Know
Even in the heat of August, rat activity doesn’t slow down in Southern Oregon. Warm nights, irrigated yards, blooming gardens, and abundant food sources make late summer a prime time for rats to move closer to homes and neighborhoods.
What we see this time of year:
- Irrigation keeps landscapes attractive to rats even when everything else dries out
- Fruit trees, blackberry bushes, gardens, and compost provide easy food sources
- Sheds, woodpiles, and crawl spaces offer cool daytime shelter
- Increased outdoor activity means more chances to spot signs of rats
Common signs of rat activity:
- Droppings near garbage, pet food, sheds, or chicken coops
- Gnaw marks on wood, plastic, wiring, or stored items
- Burrows along foundations, fences, or woodpiles
- Scratching or movement in walls or crawl spaces
- Greasy rub marks along walls or pipes

Board of Trustees Places Local Option Levy on the November 2026 Ballot
The Jackson County Vector Control District Board of Trustees — Craig Hility, Mike Taylor, Bruce Jackson, Cal Lanfear, and Robin Norris — has voted to place a local option levy on the November 2026 ballot.
The District requires additional funding to respond to increased demands for service and the rising costs to provide them. The proposed levy is $0.05 per $1,000 of assessed property value (about $1.25 per month / $15 per year for the average property owner).
