As part of our Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) program, Jackson County Vector Control District uses several types of traps to understand mosquito activity across the county. One of the most versatile traps is the Biogents Sentinel (BGS) trap.
What Makes BG‑Sentinel Traps Different?
BG‑Sentinel traps are designed to mimic the cues mosquitoes use to find people. They combine:
- CO₂
- A synthetic human‑scent lure
Because of their design and use of multiple attractants, BGS traps can collect a wide range of mosquito species, depending on where the trap is placed.
What We Learn From BG‑Sentinel Traps
These traps help us monitor:
- Aedes species, including nuisance biters that are active during the day, including the invasive Aedes aegypti
- Culex species, which are important for West Nile virus surveillance
- Overall mosquito activity in neighborhoods, parks, and other outdoor spaces
By understanding which species are present—and when—these traps help us make informed decisions about treatment, outreach, and prevention.
How BG Traps Fit Into Our IMM Program
Along with larval and adult mosquito control, source reduction, disease testing, and public outreach, mosquito surveillance helps us :
- Track mosquito populations throughout the season
- Identify changes in species abundance
- Detect potential disease‑carrying mosquitoes
- Target control efforts where they’re needed most
This work protects both public health and the ability for residents to enjoy the outdoors without being overwhelmed by mosquitoes.
Board of Trustees Places Local Option Levy on the November 2026 Ballot
The Jackson County Vector Control District Board of Trustees — Craig Hility, Mike Taylor, Bruce Jackson, Cal Lanfear, and Robin Norris — has voted to place a local option levy on the November 2026 ballot.
The District requires additional funding to respond to increased demands for service and the rising costs to provide them. The proposed levy is $0.05 per $1,000 of assessed property value (about $1.25 per month / $15 per year for the average property owner).
