Mosquito Testing Begins Mid- July

Jackson County Vector Control District will begin testing mosquito pools collected from our traps starting in Mid-July. Mosquito pools are tested for several pathogens, including West Nile virus, which tends to be most prevalent in our region during late summer.  Thanks to our updated testing equipment, mosquito pools are tested either the day they were collected or the day after.  Our ability to obtain testing results quickly helps us stay ahead of potential public health risks!

What We’re Testing

Our lab focuses on two primary mosquito species that can carry West Nile virus:

  • Culex pipiens — found in both urban and suburban areas, often breeding in artificial containers, gutters, and standing water around homes.
  • Culex tarsalis — more common in rural and agricultural areas and the most common vector for West Nile virus in the western United States.

These mosquitoes are collected weekly from traps placed across the county and then grouped into “pools” for laboratory testing.

Why This Matters

  • Helps identify where West Nile virus may be circulating
  • Guides targeted mosquito control efforts
  • Supports timely public communication during peak mosquito season
  • Reduces unnecessary pesticide use by focusing treatment where it’s needed most
