Jackson County Vector Control District Announces 2026 Tire Recycle Drive — Program’s Future Uncertain After 60 Years of Flat Funding
Central Point, OR — August 27, 2026 — The Jackson County Vector Control District (JCVCD) is pleased to announce its annual Tire Recycle Drive, scheduled for September 3rd and 4th from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at 555 Mosquito Lane, Central Point, Oregon.
This free event allows Jackson County residents to recycle unwanted tires and reduce mosquito breeding sites throughout the community. Each household may bring up to 15 rimless car or truck tires (34 inches or smaller). Proof of Jackson County residency is required.
Collection Guidelines
At the request of the recycling company, JCVCD cannot accept:
- Tires cut in half or in pieces
- Tires larger than 34 inches, tractor, or commercial tires
- Tires without tread or with wire showing
- Tires from commercial businesses
Tires not meeting these requirements will be rejected.
A Decade of Community Impact: Over 95,000 Tires Recycled
In spring 2026, JCVCD collected 9,500 tires, saving Jackson County residents over $104,500 in disposal costs.
Over the past 10 years, the Tire Recycle Drive has removed 95,727 tires from neighborhoods, fields, and rural properties — preventing thousands of mosquito‑breeding sites and saving residents more than $1 million in disposal fees.
These efforts significantly reduce standing water, improve public health, and support cleaner, safer communities across Jackson County.
Funding Limitations May Affect Future Tire Drives
JCVCD is not funded through the Jackson County general budget. The District operates solely on a long‑standing assessment paid directly by residents — just $0.04 per $1,000 of assessed home value.
This rate has remained unchanged for nearly 60 years, even as operational costs, service demands, and countywide growth have increased. Under this decades‑old funding level, the District must support all mosquito surveillance, disease testing, public outreach, mosquitofish distribution, and community programs like the Tire Recycle Drive.
Because the District continues to operate on the same small revenue base established in the 1960s, this year’s Tire Recycle Drive may be the last one offered without additional funding support.
Board of Trustees Moves Forward With November Ballot Measure
To address long‑term funding needs, the JCVCD Board of Trustees has voted to place a $0.05 local option levy on the November 2026 ballot.
This measure allows voters to consider whether updated funding is necessary to maintain and strengthen essential public‑health services. This information is provided solely for public awareness; no advocacy or campaign activity is being conducted.
